Pinkies, Part 2

Last time I wrote about how I discovered I had too much tension in my hands, especially as I tended to pull my 5th fingers upwards and backwards as I played.

As I work to rid my playing of this unnecessary tension, I’m seeing a lot of changes in my playing:

Before – Tense – fear, impatience, paralysis

After – Relaxed – engaged, nimble, authoritative, empathy, legato notes

Conventional wisdom would have it that as you worked on conquering fear and impatience, you would become less tense. I am a believer in doing the opposite- work on releasing the tension, and everything just becomes easier, stage fright disappears, I start to listen and enjoy what others are doing a lot more.
